One
of Hollywood’s hottest and “most likeable” couples
join the community while juggling a successful marriage, parenting,
acting and music careers, as well as producing their own television
sitcom.
A street-wise youth who grew up in West Philadelphia and now one of
Hollywood’s highest-paid actors, Will Smith, met his match when
he married actress, Jada Pinkett. Jada, although petite and a natural
beauty, confirms that big things do, in fact, come in small packages.
She was raised in a rough neighborhood in Baltimore but with her “iron
fist in a velvet glove” demeanor and determination she quickly
proved herself as both a serious and comedic actress in the world of
entertainment.
The couple first met on the set of Smith’s hit television series:
The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air in 1990. They were close friends for some
time before Jada broke up with her (then) boyfriend and Smith divorced
his first wife. The couple married on New Year’s Eve, 1997 and
they now have two beautiful children, Jaden Christopher Syre and Willow
Reign. Will also has a son, Williard C. “Trey” III with
his former wife. Will and Jada are currently building a new home in
the Calabasas area and enjoying life in the “Burbs”; however,
they are certainly still prominent fixtures in the tinsel-town limelight.
Apparently, they share much more in common than just thriving acting
careers. They share a passion for music, as well as a collaboration
of “behind the camera” projects. With all of their commitments,
the Smiths find time to maintain two mega careers, a happy marriage
and raise their children while demonstrating that they each have their
own extraordinary dimensions.
Will Smith initially became famous as a rapper producing two platinum
albums and winning a Grammy. He then went on to demonstrate his acting
talents in both television and films. Everyone remembers the hit television
comedy, The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air, a popular sitcom that ran for six
years featuring Will as the central character. He consequently branched
out into film and in 1993 he attained critical accolades as a young,
gay con man pretending to be Sidney Poiter’s son in Six Degrees
of Separation. His career subsequently exploded with a series of box
office champs, such as, Independence Day, Enemy Of The State, Wild Wild
West, The Legend Of Bagger Vance, Bad Boys I and II, Men in Black I
and II, and Ali. Smith also served as Executive Producer for the Robert
DiNiro / Eddie Murphy comedy Showtime in 2002.
His performance in Ali earned him an Academy Award Nomination for Best
Actor after tackling the character of boxing great Mohammad Ali. Will
became a fighter, boxed and worked out every week to prepare for the
role that delivered him with an Oscar nomination. So what’s on
the horizon for Will Smith with regard to the big screen? He stars in
this summer’s action thriller, I, ROBOT where in the year 2035,
robots are an everyday household item, and everyone trusts them except
for one, slightly paranoid detective (Smith) investigating what he alone
believes is a crime perpetrated by a robot. The case leads him to discover
a frightening threat to the human race. I, ROBOT uses fantastic state-of-the-art
visual effects to bring the world of robots to life. Following this
thrilling special effects film, you will have the opportunity to experience
the other end of the spectrum and the magic of movie making when Will
partakes in DreamWorks’ upcoming computer-animated comedy Shark
Tale. Will Smith’s voice is the lead character “Oscar”.
The sea underworld is shaken up when the son of the shark mob boss (Robert
DiNiro) is found dead and a young fish named Oscar is found at the scene.
Oscar is a fast-talking little fish that takes advantage of the situation
and makes himself look like he killed the finned mobster; however, he
soon comes to realize that his claim may have serious consequences.
Other stars’ voices you may recognize in the film are Renee Zellweger,
Angelina Jolie, Jack Black and Martin Scorsese. The story of what happens
when one little fish tells a great white lie is scheduled for an October
1, 2004 release.
Jada Pinkett Smith landed her first major television role on the Cosby
Show spin-off, A Different World in 1991, but it wasn’t until
she played opposite Eddie Murphy in The Nutty Professor that she gained
widespread recognition. After appearing in several motion picture comedies,
Jada was determined not to be type cast and subsequently co-starred
in the Matrix sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and the trilogy, The Matrix
Revolutions.
Jada, like her husband, has a passion for music and has been singing
all her life. She put her dreams of pop stardom aside when she starting
climbing the ladder of success as an actress. However, recently Jada
has been moonlighting as the lead singer of Wicked Wisdom, a band that
has been performing in Los Angeles for over a year. The actress will
be taking her act on the road, after landing an opening on one of the
highest-profile tours, Britney Spears’ “Onyx Hotel”.
Don’t worry Jada fans…she hasn’t given up her day
job; her next movie Collateral is a thriller starring Tom Cruise and
Jamie Foxx. The movie will be directed by Michael Mann who directed
Will and Jada in Ali. Cruise plays a contract killer who forces a taxicab
driver, who is also a struggling comedy writer (Jamie Foxx), to chauffeur
him around on a series of hits. Jada will star as the love interest
of Foxx's character. Expect to see this action-packed movie in theatres
early August, 2004. Furthermore, Jada will join Queen Latifah and the
two will play police detectives in an action-comedy due out early next
year. It appears that Jada, while defining her own style and femininity,
matches Will’s creative nature stride for stride.
If Will and Jada’s careers aren’t demanding enough…the
dynamic duo are also co-creators and executive producers of the entertaining
UPN sitcom, “All of Us” bringing their real-life domestic
adventures to the small screen. Taking into consideration Will’s
own experience of raising one son with his first wife and having an
extended family, the show is somewhat inspired by their own household.
Will describes the sitcom. "It's a series about blended families.
It takes a fresh, timely look at how divorced parents raise their kids
together, approaching the new family dynamic with humor and heart. We're
not skating around the issues that are very real in a divorce environment;
how it affects the children, how it affects everyone in the family,
how it affects all of us." ALL OF US is UPN’s most watched
series and highest-rated show among persons 12-34 of the 2003-2004 season.
Obviously, Will and Jada are as committed to home and family as they
are to their Hollywood success. So how does the couple maintain romance
in their marriage with so much going on in their careers, not to mention,
their most important job of parenting? Will says "With us it's
lots of sex and lots of skiing!"
Why are Will and Jada such a hot, likeable Hollywood couple? No doubt
because the spark that ignited their romance still sizzles; but more
importantly because they glow with genuine contentment and they’ve
created a wholesome identity for themselves.
